Social Security arrives the month after the month it's for: January's benefit comes in February. SSI arrives in the month it's for, or the business day before the 1st. If a payment is late, SSA asks you to allow three more mailing days before calling 1-800-772-1213.

Which payment day is yours?

Born on the 1st–10th: the second Wednesday. 11th–20th: the third Wednesday. 21st–31st: the fourth Wednesday. This is for retirement, survivors and disability (SSDI) benefits you started getting in May 1997 or later.
It's the birth date of the person whose work record pays you. If you're paid as a spouse, your spouse's birth date sets the day.
The 3rd of the month if you got Social Security before May 1997, or you get SSI too. A few others are paid on the 3rd as well, among them people living outside the US and people whose state pays their Medicare premiums.
SSI on the 1st. Supplemental Security Income is a separate program with its own day.
Weekends and holidays move a payment earlier, never later: the 1st and the 3rd to the business day before, and a Wednesday that's a federal holiday to the Tuesday.

January's SSI was paid on December 31, 2026, so January has no SSI day of its own. January 2028's SSI arrives December 30, 2027, so December has two.

Is this the official Social Security schedule?

No. It's worked out from the Social Security Administration's payment rules and checked day by day against SSA's own 2027 schedule, which is the official one. PrintDates isn't affiliated with SSA.

Why are there two SSI payments in some months?

When the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, SSI arrives the business day before: at the end of the month before. That month then has two SSI days and the next has none. It's the next month's payment arriving early, not an extra one.

Which month is my Social Security payment for?

The month before. Social Security is paid the month after the month it's for, so the payment you get in February is January's. SSI is different: it's paid for the month it arrives in.

What if my payment doesn't arrive?

For direct deposit, SSA says to check with your bank first. For a mailed check, SSA asks you to allow three more mailing days before contacting it, at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).

Are VA benefits on this calendar?

No. Veterans' compensation and pension follow VA's own schedule, which isn't part of Social Security's.
