How the bracket works

On Selection Sunday a committee picks the field: every conference's tournament champion gets an automatic bid, and the committee fills the rest with at-large teams. It then ranks all 76 on one list and spreads them over four regions, each seeded 1 to 16. The four best teams on the list are the four 1 seeds.

From 2027 the field is 76 teams, up from 68. Before the First Round, the 12 lowest-seeded automatic qualifiers and the 12 lowest-seeded at-large teams play 12 Opening Round games (Tue–Wed, Mar 16–17), replacing the old First Four. Each winner takes its line in the 64-team bracket.

In the First Round the seeds in every game add up to 17: 1 plays 16, 8 plays 9, and so on. The winners meet in the Second Round, the Sweet 16 and the Elite Eight; each region's champion goes to the Final Four in Detroit (Apr 3), and the two semifinal winners play for the title on Apr 5. Which regions meet in the semifinals depends on where the committee places them, so the blank bracket leaves the region names for you to write in.

Good to know

When is Selection Sunday 2027?

Sunday, March 14, 2027. The men's and women's brackets are both revealed that day, and the tournament starts Tuesday, March 16 with the Opening Round.

How many teams are in the 2027 NCAA tournament?

76, eight more than in 2026. Twelve Opening Round games cut the field to 64, and 63 more games decide the champion: 75 in all.

When does the first round start?

The First Round of 64 is Thu–Fri, Mar 18–19. The Opening Round comes first: Tue–Wed, Mar 16–17, in Dayton, Ohio, and Wichita, Kan. The women's tournament's First Round is a day later.

How do I fill in and print my picks?

Print the blank sheet and write the teams on their seed lines after the bracket is announced, or choose “Type teams”, type them into the First Round lines, then click a winner in each game. Your champion goes in the box in the middle. Picks stay on this device until you clear them, and the sheet prints them: winners in bold, teams you knocked out struck through.

How does the scoring on the sheet work?

Simple pool scoring that makes every round worth the same: 1 point per right pick in the First Round, then 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 for the champion, 192 at most. The tie-breaker is the total points scored in the championship game.
