Reading the sheet

The strip at the top is the whole horizon, as if you turned once on the spot: north of the equator, south is in the middle, with east to its left and west to its right. The higher something is drawn, the higher it stood. A planet drawn hollow was above the horizon but couldn't be seen, in daylight or too near the Sun.

Without a time, the sheet shows the evening, an hour after sunset, when the first planets show. Give a time (a birth time, a wedding, the minute you met) and the Moon and planets move to where they were then.

Below, the week either side: the Moon's phases with the full moon's name, meteor showers at their peak night with how bright the Moon was, eclipses and whether the place saw them, the seasons, and the planets' best nights. Your day is marked.

Where the numbers come from

Everything is calculated, not looked up: the Sun, the Moon and the planets with Astronomy Engine, which agrees with the US Naval Observatory to within a minute. Meteor showers return when the Sun reaches the same point in the sky each year; their peaks come from the International Meteor Organization's working list.

Places are the world's towns and villages of 500 people or more, found by the names people use for them (NYC, Bombay, München), from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0). If yours isn't there, the nearest one is close enough: across 50 km the sky shifts by a few minutes. Times are the place's own clock on that day, daylight saving and historical changes included.
