How a 13 team round robin works

A 13 team round robin has 13 rounds of 6 games, 78 games in all: every team plays the other 12 once. With an odd number of teams one team sits out each round, so every team has one bye, shown at the end of its round.

The rounds follow the circle method. Round 1 pairs 2 v 13, 3 v 12, 4 v 11, 5 v 10, 6 v 9 and 7 v 8, and team 1 has the bye; then the bye stays in its place while the rest move one place a round. Nobody plays twice in a round, and nobody waits more than a round for a game.

Write each result in the standings grid twice, in each team's row under the other's number, then add up the wins, losses and ties. Many leagues give 2 points for a win and 1 for a tie (3 and 1 in soccer). Teams level on points are usually split by their game against each other, then by points scored minus points allowed.

Running the round robin

One sheet for the whole league night or season: the schedule and the table.

  1. Number the teamsType them beside the sheet, or write them in the standings. A draw is fairest: shuffle the list, or pull numbers from a hat.
  2. Play round by roundEach round's games can be played at once, one to a court or field. The team in the Bye column sits that round out.
  3. Write in each scoreIn the schedule, then in the standings: once in each team's row, under the other team's number.
  4. Add up and rankWins, losses, ties and points in the totals, then the place. Use the notes for your tie-breakers.

Good to know

How many games are in a 13 team round robin?

78: each team plays 12, and every game has two teams, so 13 × 12 ÷ 2. They fit in 13 rounds of 6, with a different team sitting out each round.

How long does it take?

13 rounds, each as long as one game if there's a court or field for every game in it (6). With fewer, play the round's games in turn.

How do you break a tie in the standings?

Agree on it before the first game. A common order: the game between the tied teams, then points scored minus points allowed, then points scored. Three or more level: use their games against each other.

Can the round robin lead into a bracket?

Yes, as pool play: the top teams go on to a 4 team bracket, seeded by their places in the standings, or the top eight to an 8 team bracket.

Can I fill it in on screen?

Type the teams beside the sheet and they print on it, shrunk to fit their lines; the tournament's name goes on the sheet too. They stay on this device for next time. “Print blank” prints it without them, and the PDF is always blank.
